I created this painting on location in September. The process took about 3 hours and I did not add anything in the studio. I used Daniel Smith watercolors and Arches 140 lb cotton cold press paper block. The moon was actually there, slightly more to the east and it presented an interesting and almost surreal backdrop to the setting. The aspen leaves made a beautiful song in the breeze and the distant peak rose solemnly in contrast with the happy fall colors. I try to convey a sense of place with this painting evoking the feelings I had while being there.

Jana Aukon was born and raised in Riga, Latvia. She moved to Flagstaff in the early nineties and attended Flagstaff High School, and later Northern Arizona University, receiving a studio art minor along with a degree in Anthropology. She has continued her art education, taking watercolor and studio arts classes and has been focusing primarily on the Southwestern landscape in watercolor.
